5 Ways to Increase the Natural Light in Your Home

Last Updated: 2 January 2023

Whether you're stuck inside working or doing chores or simply lamenting at the grey British weather, sometimes, this can get you down. There are many known advantages to natural light including improved mood and well-being, as well as physical health benefits, which is why it's important to get out when you can and soak up some Vitamin D.

Of course, natural light doesn't just mean spending time outdoors and feeling the sun on your skin. When you welcome increased levels of natural light into your home, you are opening yourself up to brighter, lighter rooms which will not only boost your mood but could also help to reduce costs on lighting and reduce eye strain caused by a darkened environment.

So, how can you increase the levels of natural light in your home?

Patio Doors

What could be better than a set of patio doors leading out onto a terrace or decking in your garden? Providing the perfect indoor-to-outdoor solution, patio and French doors are the ultimate stylish addition to your home. In addition, they will also let plenty of natural light in all year round, regardless of whether they're standing wide open in the summer or locked tight in the winter months.

Larger Windows

This might seem like common sense, but installing more oversized windows in your property will definitely let more natural light into your home. While this might seem like a great idea, it's important to make sure that larger windows will suit and work with your property, without causing any structural issues. It's also best to make sure any work is carried out by a professional, but if you are convinced this is the route for you, it will definitely be a solution to the problem!

Skylight

Skylights can make great additions to the upper floors of a home, offering plenty of natural light and the potential for increased airflow, too. While skylights won't work for every property, where they are suitable, they are often chosen for their stylishness as well as their practicality. A real win-win situation!

Mirrors

If you don't have the ability or budget to make any significant structural changes to your property, one easy way to increase the amount of natural light in a room is to add mirrors - and plenty of them! Mirrors will naturally reflect any light in the room and make the space seem larger and airier, so if you are struggling with a small room or a dark corner, hang a mirror and you will soon see the difference.

Window Cleaning

This may seem a little strange at first, but my fifth and final way to increase the natural light in your home is simply to give your windows a thorough clean! You might be surprised by how much dust and dirt have built up on your windows over time and it can be easy to overlook the importance of keeping them clean. However, give your windows a good clean - both inside and out - and you should get a cleaner, brighter home in no time at all!

Follow any one of these tips and you should be setting yourself up for a lighter, brighter home environment. All that's left to do is sit back, relax, and soak up the sunlight!
