Book Review: All About Us by Tom Ellen

All About Us by Tom Ellen book cover

AD* | If you could turn back the clock, would you choose a different life?

Ben’s always loved the month of December, but this year, with his relationship with Daphne on the rocks, it’s missing its usual magic. And then his old friend Alice gets back in touch. Ben’s always thought of Alice as the one that got away, and he can’t help but wonder: what if he’d done things differently all those years ago?

He never imagines he might get to find out… but when a stranger sells Ben a mysterious watch one freezing winter’s night, he’s astonished to wake up the next morning on 5th December 2005: the day he first kissed Daphne, leaving Alice behind.

Now Ben must make the biggest decision of his life, all over again. But this time around, will he finally find the courage to follow his heart?

Settle down with a mug of hot chocolate and a mince pie or two, because it's time for another festive book review here on The Writing Greyhound!

All About Us is a sweet yet poignant love story, taking inspiration from Dickens' classic A Christmas Carol. The main character, Ben, finds himself with a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to revisit some of the most pivotal moments from Christmases past. From the very start of his relationship with Daphne to heartbreaking moments with his late mother, this is a bittersweet read about true love and realising just how good life really is.

This book takes you on a whistlestop tour through Ben's teenage years and adult life, providing the opportunity to find out more and more about his past through carefully revealed clues. This is a story with multiple different elements, including magic, romance, family, and - of course - that all-important festive cheer.

The concept of All About Us is interesting - if you had the chance to go back in time and potentially change your life, would you do it? As Scrooge learns in A Christmas Carol, things aren't always that simple and an out-of-this-world experience can leave you with a totally different outlook on life. Will the same happen to Ben?

This is the first book I've read by Tom Ellen and I very much enjoyed the story. The writing is expertly crafted and highly engaging, and the mystery of how the story will end keeps you guessing right until the very end.

Set in December and featuring a healthy dose of nostalgia, All About Us is the perfect story to keep you company on a chilly winter night!
