Book Review: I Let You Fall by Sara Downing

I Let You Fall by Sara Downing book cover

AD* | On a summer night in London, art teacher Eve Chapman finds herself in a hospital emergency room. She watches surgeons desperately operate on a young woman with a terrible head injury. But when the bandages are removed, Eve is horrified to find her own body on the operating table.

Trapped in a coma, Eve struggles to cope with the fact that no matter how hard she tries, her family and friends cannot see or hear her. But then she meets Luca Diaz, a handsome and comatose lawyer who can see her. He takes Eve under his wing and teaches her how to use her new abilities to help the living.

As the weeks pass, Eve struggles to find a way back to her body and to Nathan, the man she loves. But the more time she spends with Luca, the more she wonders if her old life is worth going back to at all.

I loved this book! It has a unique premise that instantly hooked me and kept me reading page after page. I couldn't put the book down!

The main character Eve is rich and complex. She is equal parts emotional, sad, and determined to escape her fate. The other main character is Luca - the love interest. He's handsome, friendly, and funny, so it's no surprise he ticks all of Eve's boxes!

I loved how the different threads of the book gradually drew together, and everything was neatly tied up at the book's conclusion. It's well-paced and well-written throughout.

The story is firmly anchored in its sense of place. The setting is a fictionalised version of a real London hospital, and the descriptions of the hospital and city are vivid and lifelike. The book's interactions between patients, staff, and visitors are also exceptionally written. One particular scene moved me to tears - I'm sure you'll know which part I'm talking about if you read the book!

It's humbling to think that the kindness and compassion shown to Eve and Luca in the book is mirrored across the country, every single day, by our fantastic care teams.

I Let You Fall is an unusual book, but one that is definitely memorable and I'm sure it will stick with me.
