Book Review: The Cove by L.J. Ross

The Cove by L.J. Ross book cover

THE PERFECT ESCAPE...

Gabrielle Adams has it all – brains, beauty, a handsome fiancĂ©, and a dream job in publishing. Until, one day, everything changes.

The ‘Underground Killer’ takes his victims when they least expect it: standing on the edge of a busy Tube platform, as they wait for a train to arrive through the murky underground tunnels of London.

Gabrielle soon learns that being a survivor is harder than being a victim, and she struggles to return to her old life. Desperate to break free from the endless nightmares, she snatches up an opportunity to run a tiny bookshop in a picturesque cove in rural Cornwall.

She thinks she’s found the perfect escape but has she swapped one nightmare for another?

Kicking off what's sure to be a brilliant new series, The Cove is the first book in the Summer Suspense Mysteries series. I adore author L.J. Ross' DCI Ryan books, so of course, I couldn't wait to get started on The Cove!

The story follows Gabrielle Adams, a successful young publisher who seems to have it all - until one day, her life changes forever. Suddenly cut off from the life she loved, Gabrielle takes a chance on a fresh start away from London and winds up in a gorgeous Cornish coastal village. However, it soon becomes apparent that you can't always run forever...

This book has elements of lots of different genres, all of which come together to create a highly engaging story. From cosy mystery to thriller and romance, there's a little bit of something for everyone in The Cove. The end result is another beautifully written success story from L.J. Ross.

The main character Gabrielle is in equal parts vulnerable and determined. Despite the horrific events that happened to her, she is stronger than she realises and this only makes her all the more likeable. She also encounters a motley cast of characters in the cove, and they really help to bring the story to life. From Gabrielle's plain-talking new boss to the enigmatic Luke, there are certainly plenty of secrets for Gabrielle to unravel in Carnance Cove.

Gripping and well-paced throughout, my only criticism is the length of the book! I was so immersed in the story that I finished it within one day, but I was sad to finish it so quickly. One thing's for certain - book two will definitely be making its way onto my tbr list!

Rating: 4 stars
