6 Tips to Make Your Next Road Trip Perfect

6 Tips to Make Your Next Road Trip Perfect

Although we're all still at home, waiting for lockdown restrictions to be lifted, I bet I'm not the only one who is dreaming of their next holiday! Whether you can't wait to go back to a favourite place or want to get out there and explore somewhere new, the first post-lockdown getaway is bound to be incredible!

Once it's safe to travel again, I'd love to go on a road trip and explore somewhere new. So, no matter if you are a seasoned traveller or are just considering a road trip, I've put together some top tips to help you make the most of your next adventure!

1. Plan Your Route

The last thing you want is to end up hopelessly lost! If your sense of direction is as bad as mine, then the chances are that you will need to rely on apps and technology such as Google Maps, or just good old-fashioned paper maps.

Taking the time to plan your trip in advance will mean that you can easily factor in time for sleeping, eating, and visiting all the attractions you want to see. It can also help by navigating the best routes between destinations, or ensuring you will always get to your day's accommodation in plenty of time.

2. Ensure Your Vehicle is Roadworthy

Before you set off, you should always perform a vehicle check. This doesn't need to be overly complicated, however - simply follow the basics and check items such as tyre pressure, tyre tread, oil levels, and so on. Ensuring your vehicle is in tip-top condition should hopefully help to prevent any unwanted breakdowns when you're on the road.

Don't forget to double-check the legal requirements for travelling in the country or countries you will be visiting. Aside from insurance, you may need to be over a certain age limit or carry additional items such as road safety equipment or a personal breathalyser.

3. Break Out the Tunes!

You can't have a road trip without a road trip playlist! Get your friends or family involved and make it a fun, collaborative way to pick music that you will all enjoy. Whether you go for old-school favourites, classic jams, or the latest chart hits, music is a surefire way to help pass the time and keep you all smiling and singing along.

4. Stock Up on Snacks

Every road trip needs a good selection of snacks! Pack all your favourites - and drinks too - and enjoy munching on them as you travel. It's a good idea to bring a cool bag to keep things fresh, especially if you are travelling during the summer months. Additionally, try to avoid messy snacks or food that could easily turn bad if left unrefrigerated.

5. Embrace the Journey

Rather than sticking to all the usual tourist hotspots, taking the road less travelled really is the best way to see the world. From local cuisine to incredible views, give yourself the opportunity to see the real side of the places you are visiting.

You could do some research online before leaving, or even just chat with the locals to get their recommendations. You never know what hidden gems you might uncover!

6. Don't Overdo it

When planning your route, try to avoid spending literally all day on the road. Although the idea of the road trip is to travel, this doesn't mean that you need to be driving 24/7! Instead, take regular breaks to stretch your legs and recharge before continuing the journey.

This is also important for safety reasons. Even if you are sharing the driving, being cooped up in the car all day can lead to fatigue and a loss of concentration. If you do start to feel tired while driving, you should always pull over somewhere safe and take a break.

  1. These are all really great tips! I love going on a road trip, snacks are super important! Make sure they're nice and easy to get to though, it's a pain when the food has loads of wrappers. The last point is probably the most important though, don't overdo it, take breaks when needs be, stretch your legs and get some fresh air - you don't want to feel tired behind the wheel. Great post thanks for sharing!

  4. Leave the kids at home! That's my best tip for a perfect roadtrip!
    Haha! Great list :)

  5. I love to drive but living on the small island of Jersey it only happens when I head off to Europe or the UK. Always great rock drive anthems for me.

  6. Fab tips! I love a road trip. Snacks are so important and they have to be in easy reach of either myself or the kids so I don't have to lean while driving.
