5 Top Tips for Updating Your Digital Branding

5 Tips for Updating Your Digital Branding

AD* | Fed up with the way your website looks or just wanting to give it a refresh? This is often the time of year when we start to consider not just spring cleaning, but sprucing up our lives too - and, of course, that applies to our digital spaces as well!

Digital branding is important because it defines your appearance, approach, and messaging. Whether you are a freelancer, blogger, or small business owner, your online space is your chance to showcase your words, products, or services to the world. Plus, having a strong digital presence has never been more important. With the ongoing Covid restrictions, more and more people are moving online for their everyday essentials.

With this in mind, I've put together some top tips to help you refresh your digital branding and make the most of your online space this year.

1. Decide Your Style

Chic and minimalist or fun and vibrant? This is your opportunity to define your branding and create a bespoke style that suits you and your blog or business. If you don't really know where to start, creating a mood board is a great way to narrow down your options and pick more coherent designs and colour palettes. You could either get creative and make a physical mood board (if you like it, you could even use it as a piece of artwork to personalise your workspace or home office!) or get busy on Pinterest. There's endless inspiration out there so set aside some time to put down your thoughts and really get creative thinking about your brand.

2. Coordinate Your Platforms

Whether you have just a few platforms or you're signed up to every social media network possible, you should always try to maintain a consistent, coordinated look across all your platforms. This obviously includes your blog or website, but it also includes your social media platforms, email newsletters, and any advertising you do. The level of consistency you choose between each platform will ultimately be a personal decision, but don't forget that different platforms will also have different requirements in terms of image sizes, for example.

3. Take Advantage of Free Tools and Resources

Updating your digital branding needn't cost the earth. If you don't want to shell out for the services of a professional designer or third-party company, there are plenty of free tools and resources that you can use. For instance, you can find some great free fonts on this site that might just be perfect for your project. Just bear in mind that some tools will have a basic free option with more premium services hidden behind a paywall. However, if you are savvy and creative, you can make some amazing designs using just free options. Give it a go and see what you can create!

4. Strategise

Strategy is another key component of a successful rebrand. Once you've got all your new assets, logos, branding etc ready, make sure to roll them out as smoothly as possible. Whether you're planning a low-key update or can't wait to show off your brand new site, planning and strategising will help things go much more smoothly. Before you start creating anything, it's also a good idea to conduct some competitor research to see how others in your space are presenting their online personas. While you don't want to copy what they're doing (even if they're doing it well!) it might still help to give you some pointers for your own branding.

5. Don't Be Afraid

This might all seem like a lot of hard work, but maintaining a strong online presence with clear messaging and branding really is important. However, this doesn't mean that it should be daunting or offputting. Regardless of whether it's your blog or your business, it's your space so don't be afraid to personalise it and make it your own. If you are struggling, you could always ask friends and family for their opinions - maybe create a few options and ask which they prefer. Don't forget though - at the end of the day, this is your chance to make your space shine.

Digital branding is important, but it needn't be something to be unsure about. Simply follow these top tips, unleash your creativity, and enjoy the process of creating a brand new look for your online space!
