Book Review: Our Story by Miranda Dickinson

Our Story by Miranda Dickinson book cover

AD* | Otty has just landed her dream job. She's about to join the writing team of one of the most respected showrunners in TV. And then the night before her first day, she's evicted from her flat.

Joe has been working with Russell for years. He's the best writer on his team, but lately, something has been off. He's trying to get his mojo back, but when his flatmate moves out without warning he has other things to worry about.

Otty moving into Joe's house seems like the most obvious solution to both their problems, but neither is prepared for what happens next. Paired together in the writing room, their obvious chemistry sparks from the page and they are the writing duo to beat. But their relationship off the page is an entirely different story, and neither of them can figure out why.

And suddenly the question isn't, will they, or won't they? It's why won't they?

Our Story is a charming romantic comedy - the perfect story for curling up with to devour in one sitting!

This is the first novel by Miranda Dickinson that I've had the chance to read, and it definitely met my expectations and was a highly enjoyable read. The story focuses on Otty and Joe, a couple whose chemistry sparks right from the very start. It isn't long before you start rooting for the pair and willing them to overcome the hurdles standing in the way of their happily ever after.

Both Otty and Joe are screenwriters, and the frantic pace of the writers' room and industry demands really added an extra dimension to the plot. Constantly writing to a deadline and being pushed for ever more successful ideas exhausts the pair, but it brings a sense of realism to their developing relationship and, of course, allows us to see their chemistry both on and off the page!

The writing is fresh and engaging, resulting in a story that is both fast-paced and involving. Once I started the book, I found that Joe and Otty's story was stuck in my mind and I couldn't wait to find out what would happen next.

Birmingham is the setting for the story, and it was refreshing to read a book so well ingrained in its sense of place. Although the city hardly seems like the most romantic place to set a novel, the Brummie spirit really shone through Our Story and as a reader, it was lovely to have landmarks I recognise from real life to ground me in the story.
