5 New Year's Resolutions for 2020

January 2020 calendar

It may be a cliche, but New Year's resolutions are a great way to encourage many people to actively make a difference and commit to changing their lives in a positive way. While, admittedly, many do fail their resolutions early on in the year, others are persistent and manage to break bad habits, set new ones, and make lasting changes to their lives and routines.

Realistically achievable New Year's resolutions are a must - especially if you want to avoid setting yourself up to fail. Break big goals down into more manageable targets and don't be afraid to try something new or tackle those things you've always wanted to do or keep putting off. After all, 2020 marks the start of not just a new year but a new decade too - the perfect opportunity to make a positive difference in your life!

So, with all that in mind, I've chosen some New Year's resolutions of my own to try and improve my life in 2020. Here are my five resolutions:

1. Spend Less Time on My Phone

While I do think that modern smartphones are incredible, what's not so great is that many people nowadays seem to have their phones constantly glued to their hands. I love that I can message friends, call family, take photos, listen to music, check my social media, play games, and so much more wherever I go, but I don't love wasting hours endlessly browsing my phone or feeling compelled to check for new notifications every five minutes. For these reasons, resolution number one in 2020 is to try and cut down on the amount of time I spend on my phone!

2. Avoid Unnecessary Spending

It's always good to have money in the bank for a rainy day, and this year, I'm aiming to boost my savings and avoid unnecessary spending. This doesn't mean that I won't go anywhere or buy anything at all, it just means that I will consider purchases more carefully and try to avoid spending on a whim. Not only is it good for the bank balance, but it's also good for the planet. A win-win situation!

3. Read the Bible

The Bible has been on my tbr list forever and I've been "trying" to read it on and off for years. This year, though, I'm determined to finally finish the book - or at least make a sizeable dent in it. My strategy is to try and read a few pages every day alongside the other books I'm reading to avoid making it into a chore and to make sure I can still hit my target of reading 50 books this year!

4. Better Posture

Last year, my New Year's resolutions focused on healthiness so this year, I'm going to try to continue the theme by focusing on my posture. Since I've had full-time office jobs, my posture has been steadily getting worse. I find myself either slouching in the chair or with my face inches from the computer screen - neither of which are good positions for my body. I'm hoping that by making a conscious effort to improve my posture I will see a reduction in back pain and eye strain, so fingers crossed!

5. Take Better Care of My Skin

I've never really been one for beauty regimes and my skincare routine is basic at best, so this year I figure it's about time I made an effort to look after my skin. The skin is the largest organ of the body but mine is usually neglected, so this year, I'll be taking some small steps to help keep my skin healthy. Here's to a positive, happy, and healthy 2020!
