4 Tips to Help Deal with Life's Rocky Patches

Last Updated: 07 May 2021

AD* | Ever felt like you are just on a constant stream of bad luck? Do you find yourself dreading the next stroke of bad luck and assuming that all of these unpleasant situations come in threes? The thing is, we can all have a rocky patch every now and again. It may be to do with your working environment or workload, your home life and relationships, or even a mixture of multiple things.

But regardless of the cause, it’s never easy when you feel like the whole world is against you. However, this is where you can make a choice. You can either let the bad times roll, or you can tackle it head-on and admit that it doesn’t have to be this way. It’s a tough decision to make - and admittedly, sometimes you have no control over the cause of the situation - but where possible, it's always best to take the positives and move forward with your life rather than dwelling on the situation.

This is why I've put together a handful of inspiring ways to help you get through any rocky patch you might be facing or dealing with in the future.

Start Exercising and Taking Better Care of Yourself

Exercising is a great way to refocus your mind and clear your head a little, especially if you are feeling particularly stressed or emotional. Exercising produces hormones that get pumped around the body and can ultimately make you feel much better about yourself.

The same can be said for your diet. When you are feeling low and upset, it’s easy to reach for those comfort foods and junk food that isn’t good for you, however, looking after yourself by eating well and drinking plenty of water can have a positive effect on your mood and well-being. Caring for your body properly should help to give you the strength you need to deal with whatever rocky road lies ahead.

Get the Right People On Your Side

Sometimes you need expert advice to get you through tough times, and it is especially important to recognise when those occasions may be. For example, if you are in a relationship that is breaking down and there are children involved, or your marriage is on the rocks, then experts in their field like family solicitors are a good port of call for some legal advice.

Alternatively, you might want holistic help for tough periods of your life or to help deal with traumatic incidents. Things like counselling could help you get through the darkest days, so don’t be afraid to seek out help and guidance. Remember, you are not alone!

Try Meditation or Relaxation Exercises

Sometimes, we can suffer from feeling overwhelmed. These feelings might be caused by stress, or perhaps grief or strong emotions have taken over. The mind can get quite chaotic with thoughts and worries, but this is when relaxation methods such as meditation can really help you clear your mind and focus on what is important. Often, through regular meditation, people are able to refocus their thoughts and gain clarity on their situation, enabling them to move forward with confidence and light.

Work On Your Mindset to Handle Negativity for Good

Our minds are powerful tools and that means that negativity can really take hold and make a situation feel so much worse than it actually is. As a result, working on techniques to focus your mind on positivity and gratitude is a great way to help you through tough times.

Make sure that you are looking after your mental health as well as your physical health. After all, sometimes the simplest lifestyle changes can end up having a strong, positive effect. Take time out to do what you want to do, recalibrate your thoughts, and focus your mind on more positive things. Even if you don't have much time, these five-minute self-care ideas are ideal for decompressing and avoiding the worst of the overwhelming feelings.

  1. Hi Lorna, great advice! Life's rocky patches can be character building. They can make us stop, think and learn. For me exercise, getting enough exercise and knowing when to step away to recharge help me through the tough times. I remind myself that "this too shall pass - maybe not today or tomorrow, but soon", which over the years I have learned is true.

    xx

  2. Sound advice Lorna! It's so easy to get bogged down with the challenges that daily life brings. Gardening is my escape. To get outside and potter around in the peace and quiet, it's so calming. x #MMBC
