The Derbyshire Peak District is a wonderful part of the country, filled with rolling countryside, picturesque views, and plenty of exciting places to visit and things to do. The Peak District is also a haven for those who like to stay active and get out and about, boasting a wide variety of trails and country walks suitable for people of all ages.

To pique your interest, here are three of my favourite walks in the Derbyshire Peak District.

Thor’s Cave

Offering beautiful views across the surrounding countryside, the walk up to Thor’s Cave is perfect for a relaxing afternoon stroll. You can park in the nearby village of Wetton, from which you can walk across the fields and up to the imposing landmark that is Thor’s Cave. This natural cavern is also great for exploring as it is possible to go up and into the mouth of the cave, though I would recommend watching your footing and avoiding it if wet as the floor of the cave can get quite slippery! If the mood takes you, it’s also possible to walk up to the top of the cave and look down over the valley below.

Edale to Kinder Scout

The picturesque village of Edale is notable for being one end of the famous Pennine Way, yet if you don’t fancy tackling the entire 268-mile trail, this short section is a great alternative. From your starting point in Edale, you will follow the Pennine Way across fields and beautiful Derbyshire countryside before starting to climb further up away from the town and into the hills. The iconic Jacob’s Ladder is a must and the views from the top will make for a great photo opportunity before you continue your walk to Kinder Scout. Don’t forget to bring plenty of water and appropriate walking/hiking gear as this can be quite a long walk. There is plenty of parking in Edale, as well as cafes and pubs where you can quench your thirst after the walk!

Mam Tor

A family-friendly walk that is much more accessible for little legs is the ascent to Mam Tor – one of the most famous walks in the Peak District. There is a handy car park just a short distance from the summit, or plenty of opportunities for walking in the area, including circular walks to and from the nearby town of Castleton. Boasting impressive views over the rolling countryside, Mam Tor is often described as a hill walk for beginners – and it’s not hard to see why!

While the weather may not exactly be the best for walking at the moment, there’s plenty of time to plan an outing and get prepared for a walk so you’re all ready to go once spring and summer roll around. If you're considering a short break in the Peak District, make sure you've got your accommodation sorted. From hotels and B&Bs to lodges with hot tubs, there are plenty of choices! So, what are you waiting for?

  1. Hi Lorna, the Lake District is somewhere I would love to visit one day. The walk from Edale to Kinder Scout sounds particularly interesting, I do like a challenging hike especially with viewss at the end.
