Book Review: Green Rising by Lauren James

Green Rising by Lauren James book cover

AD* | Gabrielle is a climate-change activist who shoots to fame when she becomes the first teenager to display a supernatural ability to grow plants from her skin. Hester is the millionaire daughter of an oil tycoon and the face of the family business. Theo comes from a long line of fishermen, but his parents are struggling to make ends meet.

On the face of it, the three have very little in common. Yet when Hester and Theo join Gabrielle and legions of other teenagers around the world in developing the strange new “Greenfingers” power, it becomes clear that to use their ability for good, they’ll need to learn to work together. But in a time of widespread corruption and greed, there are plenty of profit-hungry organizations who want to use the Greenfingers for their own ends. And not everyone would like to see the Earth saved...

As they navigate first love and family expectations, can the three teenagers pull off the ultimate heist and bring about a green rising?

Wow, what a book! From the rich characters to the inspiring storyline, Green Rising is undoubtedly a stand-out novel and one of my favourite YA books of the year so far.

The premise is quirky and original. Teenagers across the world begin developing mysterious "Greenfingers" powers that allow them to create plants and flowers seemingly from thin air. This magical ability quickly divides the world, yet leads to plenty of opportunities for those with the power to act quickly in a bid to save the planet from the worsening climate disaster.

It's fast-paced and high stakes, yet also leaves time for plenty of character development, twists and turns, and a blossoming love story. There's a little bit of everything in this brilliant book!

One thing I particularly liked was the subtle easter eggs where characters and references from the author's other books popped up. Little cameos of those familiar names was a lovely touch that certainly managed to make me smile.

I also think it's worth mentioning just how much I love that cover. All of Lauren James' book covers are gorgeous, but this one is spectacular!

Although Green Rising is fictional, the moral behind the story is clear. This worst-case scenario future of an Earth near-collapse could very easily become our own reality before long. With our current rate of using up natural resources, polluting the planet, and contributing towards global warming, the signs are clear.

The climate emergency is a very real threat, and we all need to act now before it's too late. We have reached a tipping point; we can't keep delaying and avoiding the issue. We all have a role to play if we are going to stand a chance of tipping the balance back in Earth's favour.

Let's stand up for our planet and join the #GreenRising!
