When former local girl Dr Anna Taylor arrives back on the island as a police consultant, old memories swim to the surface making her confront her difficult past. She and Ryan struggle to work together to hunt a killer who hides in plain sight, while pagan ritual and small-town politics muddy the waters of their investigation.
Holy Island is a cracking murder mystery - a thrilling, captivating read containing all the elements that make for a perfect thriller. Filled with suspense and intrigue, the book kept me turning page after page in a bid to find out whodunnit. As the story progresses, the plot also ups the ante, with more and more at stake.
The characters are complex and interesting, and I can't wait to delve deeper into their lives in future books. DCI Ryan intrigues me - and the rest of the cast of characters is just as engaging!
In addition to the action, murder, and suspense, Holy Island also features significant referencing to paganism, cults, history, and even the supernatural. These are all topics that interest me, so to find them all cropping up in this book only made me love it more.
Similarly, I always love reading a book set in a real-world location that I know, something that I've written about in the past. Having visited Holy Island several times before enabled me to draw on my own memories and experiences as I read the book.
I enjoyed this book so much that I immediately downloaded Sycamore Gap - the second book in the DCI Ryan Mysteries series. I'm loving the book so far, so expect to see my review of Sycamore Gap up on The Writing Greyhound before too long!
