5 Ways to Help Create Your Perfect Workspace

desk, workspace, study, the-writing-greyhound

Whether it's a study at home, a desk in the office, or a creative workstation where your imagination comes to life, the chances are that you will spend a significant chunk of your time at your workspace. As a result, it's important to ensure that where you work is well suited to you and your profession, optimising the space for comfort, practicality, and individuality.

If you are considering refreshing or updating your workspace - or even creating an entirely new one - here are my top tips to help you get started!

1. Greenery

Think flowers, plants, and greenery - even if it's artificial, it's still a good addition to your workspace! It's healthy for you and good for your soul, so if you can, try to incorporate a little greenery into your space. Of course, if plants aren't your thing, pets work equally well when it comes to taking a little break!

2. Personality

Don't forget to include personal items like photos, trinkets - even a mug! It's important to make your workspace your own, and you're the person who knows how you work best. For instance, creative people might benefit from the addition of bright colours, while some people prefer to take a minimalist approach to decor and design. Similarly, some people prefer working in silence while others like to listen to the radio or their favourite playlist for background noise. Consider how you work best then incorporate a little slice of your personality into your workspace. You won't regret it!

3. Lighting

A well-lit workspace is a must. Natural light is best, but if this isn't possible, it's imperative to make sure that your workspace is well-lit with artificial lighting to ensure as little strain as possible is put on your eyes. After all, the last thing you want is health complications or eye problems later on in life!

4. Temperature

While this one is often a little harder to control (or predict) maintaining a good temperature for your workspace is important for both your health and your productivity. After all, there's nothing worse than being too hot or too cold!

If your workspace has a tendency to lean towards the chilly side, think of heaters, blankets, and hot water bottles. Don't forget to stock up on a stash of hot chocolate, too! Alternatively, if you're struggling to keep cool, you may benefit from improving ventilation and airflow in the area, installing an air-con system (or a fan, for the easier and cheaper alternative), or even just keeping a ready supply of ice-cold drinks to hand!

5. Comfort

Comfort and ergonomics are also key to a successful workspace set-up. From your chair and desk to footstools, laptop stands, your mouse, keyboard, wrist rest, and back support, there's plenty to keep in mind and plenty of ways to shape your workspace to suit your body's needs.

Above all else, the key to the perfect workspace is finding the right balance. Think of a combination of individuality, practicality, and comfort, and you won't go far wrong!

  2. My biggest problem is finding somewhere to sit that's not directly under the air con, need to centre a desk in the middle of the room

  3. Depending on what mood I'm in I need somewhere where the distractions are to a minimum, as otherwise I'm "I must do this, oh look that looks more interesting" even if it isn't interesting at all! Thanks for sharing with #PoCoLo

  4. Great tips! I have lots of organisers and storage on shelves above my workspace, so I can put my hands to something should I need it. I can't work with too much clutter. 😀
