3 Places to Stay in the Derbyshire Peak District

derbyshire, peak-district, england, uk, travel

Travelling is wonderful but with such a rich variety of sights, views, history, culture and activities on our doorstep, sometimes there's no need to go further afield for a memorable getaway! Of course, it's no secret that I love getting out and about, exploring as much of my home country as I possibly can, but I'm hoping to share more and more of my travels here on The Writing Greyhound.

As a result, I've compiled a little list featuring just a few of my favourite places to stay in the Derbyshire Peak District - a brilliant part of the country that's off the usual tourist trail.

So, here is my pick of three great places to stay in the Derbyshire Peak District without further ado!

The Charles Cotton Hotel, Hartington

Located just seven and a half miles away from the picturesque Dovedale, Hartington is a charming little village situated at the gateway to the Derbyshire Peak District. The Charles Cotton Hotel dominates the village, but as a traditional pub dating back to the 1700s, it certainly doesn't feel out of place!

Still operating as a pub today, the Charles Cotton boasts seventeen light, airy, and spacious bedrooms, including several dog-friendly rooms. Despite the age of the building, the facilities are modern and the decor stylish.

Traveller's tip: The window didn't open in the room I stayed in, so to avoid overheating, be mindful of this if you are planning a trip in summer!

The Castle, Castleton

Presenting a warm, friendly and welcoming atmosphere, The Castle at Castleton is a real gem situated in the heart of a bustling Derbyshire village. Castleton is a must-visit on the Derbyshire tourist trail and boasts picturesque surroundings as well as popular walking trails and caverns all within easy reach.

The Castle pub and restaurant also has rooms, with the accommodation part of the Innkeeper's Lodge chain. A continental breakfast is included in the room rate (cooked breakfasts are also available for an additional fee) and is delicious, with fresh produce and plenty of options to choose from.

Traveller's tip: While The Castle does have parking available, spaces are limited so don't be surprised if you struggle to find a spot.

The Sycamore Inn, Birch Vale

If it's peace and quiet you are after, then look no further than the sprawling Sycamore Inn, located in the sleepy village of Birch Vale. Sometimes, a relaxing getaway is all you want, which is exactly what this hotel can offer guests.

The Inn has five rooms, some of which are dog-friendly. Again, breakfast is included in the room rate, and all food is freshly cooked to order. The staff at The Sycamore Inn are also incredibly polite and helpful, which is always a bonus!

Traveller's tip: It's worth noting that the rooms are located below the inn's main bar and restaurant, so be aware that you are likely to hear some noise during peak times.

Each offering a unique base from which to get out and about exploring the beautiful Peak District, these three hotels are ideal for anyone planning to travel to Derbyshire and searching for accommodation.

Have you ever been to the Derbyshire Peak District, or stayed at one of these places? Let me know in the comments below!

  2. It's always great to have accommodation recommended. I know I spent ages scrolling through various B&Bs in Whitby when looking for somewhere to stay.

Next time you are at The Castle, you could take a wander up Cave Dale. It's a really magical place.
