In the last months of World War II, a man wakes in a field in a country he does not know. Injured and with only flashes of memory coming back to him, he pulls himself to his feet and starts to walk, setting out on an extraordinary journey in search of his home, his past, and himself.
His name is Owen. A war he has only a vague recollection of joining is in its dying days, and as he tries to get back to England, he becomes caught up in the flood of rootless people pouring through Europe. Among them is a teenage boy, and together they form an unlikely alliance as they cross battle-worn Germany.
When they meet a troubled young woman, tempers flare and scars are revealed as Owen gathers up the shattered pieces of his life. No one is as he remembers, not even himself. How can he truly return home when he hardly recalls what home is?
Devastation Road by Jason Hewitt has been on my to-read list for a while, so I was glad to finally get round to reading it! Plus, the book is in one of my favourite genres and set in one of my favourite historical time periods, so I was definitely looking forward to giving it a go.
Jason Hewitt weaves a subtle web of a forgotten past, murky present, and unknown future in this intriguing novel. Featuring a blend of mystery, action, secrets, and romance, this is a sweeping tale set against the backdrop of a recently ended world war. The novel does not shy away from the sheer scale of destruction and devastation caused by the war, creating a realistic, poignant look back at one of the darkest periods of modern history.
Owen and his companions are a motley brigade of people who would most likely never have met under normal circumstances, forced to cross paths by the upheaval of the war and the most unlikely of circumstances. Despite barely sharing a language, the bond that binds the group together is strong and resilient - even in the face of immediate danger.
It is this bond and this companionship that brings a glimmer of hope to the group amidst so much darkness. Homes, families, towns and communities have all been lost, but together, the companions can hope for a brighter future away from the horror of the war.
Devastation Road is both heart-breaking and bittersweet, and although it is largely fictional, it isn't hard at all to imagine the very real horrors that millions of people - soldiers and civilians alike - would have faced during the Second World War.
This book is a must-read for fans of historical fiction and for those who simply want an insight into a very human side of the war.
