It creates a captivating blend of classic Gothic atmosphere and Victorian ghost stories.</div><div><br /></div><div>The narrative unfolds around Julia Pearlie, a governess facing a bleak fate after a tragic incident leaves her jobless and homeless. A glimmer of hope appears when she accepts a position as a companion to Miss Olivia Richmond. However, Mistcoate House, Olivia's residence, harbours secrets that add an ominous layer to the tale.</div><div><br /></div><div>With her Tarot readings and claims of speaking to the dead, Olivia has a sinister reputation as the Mistcoate Witch. Julia's task is to transform Olivia into a proper young lady. The characters are intricately woven into a plot that oscillates between character- and plot-driven, keeping readers engaged from the first page to the last.</div><div><br /></div><div>The characterisation in this novel is a standout element. Despite their flaws, some characters are remarkably loveable, adding depth and authenticity to the story. Davidson skillfully places the flaws of the characters at the forefront, making them a central focus of the narrative. This choice adds complexity and realism, making the characters feel genuine and relatable.</div><div><br /></div><div><i>The Fortunes of Olivia Richmond</i> embraces its Gothic roots, delivering a creeping and eerie atmosphere that makes the hairs on the back of your neck stand on end. The plot is enthralling, with the winter chill wrapping around the dark woods of Mistcoate, amplifying the sense of danger.</div><div><br /></div><div><i>The Fortunes of Olivia Richmond</i> triumphs for Louise Davidson. This debut novel is a must-read for those who appreciate the timeless allure of classic Gothic tales. From its mysterious plot to the expertly crafted characters, the book stands as a testament to Davidson's ability to deliver a captivating and haunting story. Readers will find themselves entangled in the web of Mistcoate House, unable to escape until the final page is turned.</div></div><div><br /></div><div>Rating: 5 stars</div><div><br /></div><div><i>The Fortunes of Olivia Richmond </i>is available to <b><a href="https://amzn.to/3toEQnb" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">buy</a></b> now.</div><div><br /></div><div>* I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review</div><div><br /></div><div><i>Will you be reading the book? What isn’t ordinary is the dead body in Calli Nelson’s village library. It is no one she knows, but her friend Gideon Frost has lived in Fencross Parva all his life and views any unpleasant goings-on within its boundaries as a personal challenge. Perhaps together they can solve the mystery of who killed the man, and why?</i></div><div><br /></div><span><a name='more'></a></span><div><div>Jan Jones introduces readers to the picturesque village of Fencross Parva in the first instalment of the <i>Fencross Parva Mystery</i> series, <i>A Body in the Library</i>. Set against an ordinary Cambridgeshire village backdrop, the story unfolds on a seemingly mundane Monday morning. Main character Calli Nelson's morning takes a chilling turn when a dead body is discovered in her local library!</div><div><br /></div><div>The book's highlight is its setting. Jones crafts a vivid and charming portrayal of Fencross Parva, offering readers a delightful escape into the heart of rural England. The village comes alive with its idyllic landscapes and quaint charm, providing a strong sense of place that enhances the reading experience.</div><div><br /></div><div>However, despite the promising setting, the novel falls short in various aspects. The plot, unfortunately, follows a formulaic trajectory that may leave mystery enthusiasts craving more depth and complexity. The narrative lacks surprises, and the resolution feels predictable, robbing the story of the suspense crucial to a gripping whodunit.</div><div><br /></div><div>The characters also fail to inspire. While the protagonist, Calli Nelson, is a relatable widowed librarian turned amateur sleuth, the supporting cast lacks diversity and depth. The characters feel forced and fail to establish a genuine connection with the reader. The dialogue, too, comes across as stilted, hindering the natural flow of interactions and diminishing overall engagement.</div><div><br /></div><div>One of the novel's notable characteristics is its blend of plot-driven and character-driven elements. Unfortunately, the execution leaves much to be desired. The lack of strong character development hampers the reader's investment in the individuals populating Fencross Parva. The book feels somewhat twee, with its attempts at charm and quaintness occasionally coming across as forced.</div><div><br /></div><div>A prominent theme throughout the narrative is grief, a prevalent aspect of Calli Nelson's character. Navigating her personal loss and sorrow, Calli simultaneously takes on the role of an amateur sleuth to unravel the mystery at the heart of the novel. </div><div><br /></div><div><i>A Body in the Library</i> by Jan Jones is a mixed bag. Its strengths lie in the evocative setting that brings the village of Fencross Parva to life. However, the formulaic plot, uninspired characters, and stilted dialogue detract from the overall reading experience.</div></div><div><br /></div><div>Rating: 2 stars</div><div><br /></div><div><i>The Body in the Library </i>is available to <b><a href="https://amzn.to/48yFRYF" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">buy</a> </b>now.</div><div><br /></div><div>If you like the sound of this book, you might also enjoy...</div><div><br /></div><div><div>

It’s summer, but an American production company has decided that McCredie’s is the perfect location to film a very cheesy Christmas movie. After all, who can resist the charmingly narrow historic street with its Victorian grey stone buildings and warmly lit shop windows?<br /><br />Carmen Hogan, the bookshop’s manager, is amused and a bit horrified by the goings-on, but the money the studio is paying is too good to pass up. She uses the little windfall from filming to create new displays and fend off a buyout offer from an obnoxious millionaire who wants to turn McCredie’s into a souvenir shop selling kilts made in China and plastic Nessies. Still reeling slightly from a breakup, Carmen’s not particularly looking forward to the holidays. But just as snow begins to fall and the lights of Christmas blink on, all sorts of lovely new possibilities present themselves…for McCredie’s bookstore, and for Carmen herself. </i><div><br /></div><span><a name='more'></a></span><div><div><i>Midnight at the Christmas Bookshop</i> by Jenny Colgan is a delightful holiday read that captures the Christmas spirit in Edinburgh's heart. With its engaging characters, vivid sense of place, and heartwarming storyline, this book is a perfect choice for those seeking a cosy winter escape.</div><div><br /></div><div>One of the standout features of this novel is its exceptional cast of characters. Colgan has crafted a diverse and three-dimensional ensemble that leaps off the page. From the main character Carmen to the quirky locals and the visiting American film crew, each character brings unique charm to the story. It's easy to become emotionally invested in their lives, making it one of the book's most endearing qualities.</div><div><br /></div><div>The setting itself is almost a character in its own right. Edinburgh's historic streets, grey stone buildings, and warmly lit shop windows are described in such detail that you'll feel like you're strolling through the city at Christmas. Colgan's evocative descriptions transport you to this enchanting location, adding depth and authenticity to the narrative.</div><div><br /></div><div>McCredie's bookshop is also a book lover's dream. The way it's depicted in the story makes you yearn to visit and wander through its stacks, a haven of literary treasures. The bookshop's significance to the plot adds an extra layer of warmth and charm to the story, making it an integral part of the narrative.</div><div><br /></div><div>While the book has a lighthearted tone, it doesn't shy away from exploring deeper emotions. It has a big heart, touching on self-discovery, love, and the magic of the holiday season. Carmen's self-acceptance and personal growth journey are beautifully portrayed, making her a relatable and lovable protagonist.</div><div><br /></div><div>The plot is well-structured and paced, striking a balance between plot-driven and character-focused. It unfolds at just the right speed, keeping the reader engaged without rushing through the narrative. However, while the blurb hints at romance, it's worth noting that the romantic element is not as prominent as one might expect. However, this doesn't detract from the story's overall charm.</div><div><br /></div><div><i>Midnight at the Christmas Bookshop</i> is a heartwarming and beautifully written novel that captures the magic of Christmas in the enchanting city of Edinburgh. Jenny Colgan's memorable characters, vivid descriptions, and touching themes make this book a delightful winter holiday read. Although it may not be as romance-heavy as expected, it still offers a cosy and enjoyable escape, perfect for curling up with this Christmas.</div></div><div><br /></div><div>Rating: 3 stars</div><div><br /></div><div><i>Midnight at the Christmas Bookshop </i>is available to <b><a href="https://amzn.to/44PY6Xc" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">buy</a></b> now.</div><div><br /></div><div><b>If you like the sound of this book, you might also enjoy...</b></div><div><b><br /></b></div><div>

The arrival of Isaac, the estate's new gardener, sparks an immediate and forbidden connection between them. At this moment, the stage is set for a poignant love story that transcends the boundaries of class and society.</div><div><br /></div><div>One of the first things that struck me about this book was the depth of emotion it conveys. Lorna Cook deftly weaves a tapestry of emotions throughout the narrative, taking readers on a rollercoaster ride of love, hope, sadness, and reflection. The impending war adds an extra layer of tension and urgency to the story, making every interaction between Cordelia and Isaac all the more meaningful.</div><div><br /></div><div>What sets <i>The Hidden Letters</i> apart is its ability to strike a delicate balance between being plot-driven and character-driven. While the overarching narrative is compelling and filled with twists and turns, the characters themselves are given ample room to breathe and evolve. Cordelia, the main character, undergoes significant growth throughout the story, transforming from a sheltered young woman into a strong and determined individual. However, it's not just Cordelia who experiences this transformation. Minor characters also receive attention and development, bringing them to life and adding depth to the narrative.</div><div><br /></div><div>Cook's prose flows effortlessly, making it a delight to immerse yourself in the world she creates. The historical setting is richly detailed, transporting readers to Britain on the cusp of war. The author's meticulous research is evident in the vivid descriptions and atmospheric elements that perfectly capture the essence of the time.</div><div><br /></div><div>Another noteworthy aspect of the book is its cast of characters. They are not only lovable but also highly relatable, despite the historical setting. Cook has a unique talent for creating characters that resonate with readers, drawing you into their world. What's particularly refreshing is that the flaws of the characters are not the central focus of the story; rather, they serve to add authenticity and depth to their personalities.</div><div><br /></div><div><i>The Hidden Letters</i> is an engaging and evocative read that offers a window into a bygone era. Lorna Cook's storytelling prowess shines through in this historical romance, and fans of the genre will undoubtedly find it a valuable addition to their collection. It's a testament to the author's ability to craft emotionally charged narratives that resonate with readers long after they've turned the final page.</div></div><div><br /></div><div><b>Content warnings in this book: Grief, suicidal thoughts, and a suicide attempt.</b></div><div><br /></div><div>Rating: 4 stars</div><div><br /></div><div><i>The Hidden Letters </i>is available to <b><a href="https://amzn.to/3rExwCT" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">buy</a></b> now.</div><div><br /></div><div><b>If you like the sound of this book, you might also enjoy...</b></div><div><b><br /></b></div><div>

However, while the novel offers an enjoyable reading experience, it barely scratches the surface of its potential.</div><div><br /></div><div>The story revolves around Bonnie Fraser, a chambermaid at Stirling Castle, who lives in the shadows, yearning for something more. Her chance to step out of obscurity comes at a masquerade ball hosted by the king. There she encounters Iver Mackay, a charismatic laird. The initial meeting leads to a steamy encounter that neither of them will forget. This sparks a romance that defies the boundaries of their different worlds.</div><div><br /></div><div>One of the strengths of the book lies in its emotional and hopeful tone, creating a lighthearted and relaxing atmosphere for readers. Bonnie and Iver are loveable characters, and their chemistry is palpable. However, this is where the story's potential for deeper conflict and character development remains untapped.</div><div><br /></div><div>The relationship between Bonnie and Iver, while passionate, lacks the complexity and depth that could have made it more engaging. It would have been gratifying to see the characters face and resolve more substantial challenges, allowing readers to connect with them on a personal and emotional level. Such depth could have elevated the story and made it truly memorable.</div><div><br /></div><div><i>Highlander Seduced</i> is the first instalment in the <i>Rebellious Highland Hearts</i> series, promising more tales from the Mackay clan. It will be interesting to see how subsequent books delve into the lives of other Mackay brothers, potentially exploring more intricate relationships and conflicts.</div><div><br /></div><div>The author's dedication to historical accuracy is commendable, as real historical events are seamlessly woven into the fictional narrative. This blend of fact and fiction adds gravitas and realism to the story, making the setting come alive.</div><div><br /></div><div>Comparisons to the Cinderella story are inevitable, as the tale of a prince (or laird, in this case) falling for a servant has a similar charm. However, <i>Highlander Seduced</i> could have benefited from more depth and uniqueness to set it apart.</div><div><br /></div><div><i>Highlander Seduced</i> is a pleasant read for those who enjoy historical romance, offering a mix of passion and history. While it has its merits in terms of loveable characters and a well-researched setting, it falls short of being an exceptional read due to its limited exploration of conflict and character depth. It's worth picking up if you're in the mood for a light and hopeful romance in a captivating historical setting.</div></div><div><br /></div><div>Rating: 3 stars</div><div><br /></div><div><i>Highlander Seduced </i>is available to <b><a href="https://amzn.to/3LIO2IL" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">buy</a></b> now.</div><div><br /></div><div><b>If you like the sound of this book, you might also enjoy...</b></div><div><b><br /></b></div><div>

While it has some redeeming qualities, there are significant flaws that ultimately left me disappointed.</div><div><br /></div><div>One of the immediate issues with the book is its pacing. It starts with a tantalising spoiler, pulls you into a crucial moment in the story, and then abruptly throws you back in time. This approach robs the narrative of tension that could have been built gradually and chronologically. It's a missed opportunity to engage the reader fully.</div><div><br /></div><div>The writing itself feels underdeveloped at times. Some of the character's comments at the end of the chapters seem out of place and disjointed from the story's flow. This is a shame as it disrupts the reader's immersion in the plot.</div><div><br /></div><div>However, one of the book's highlights is the setting – a remote cabin in the Scottish highlands. The author does an excellent job of creating a vivid sense of place, and this is definitely one of the book's strongest aspects. The isolation and harsh beauty of the landscape add to the story's atmosphere.</div><div><br /></div><div>As for the plot, it is mysterious and tense, keeping you engaged. It strikes a good balance between being plot-driven and character-driven. However, it falls short in terms of character development. The characters are largely unlikeable, making it challenging to relate to or sympathise with them. The exception here is teenager Cole, who comes across as one of the more relatable characters. However, the parts from his viewpoint feel forced and clumsy, sadly not quite capturing the authenticity of a teenager's perspective.</div><div><br /></div><div>The story's premise is undeniably interesting, but the execution is lacklustre. The twist at the end, while meant to be shocking, feels melodramatic and over the top, stretching the boundaries of belief. This was a missed opportunity to deliver a more nuanced and satisfying conclusion.</div><div><br /></div><div><i>The Holiday Home</i> has the potential to be a gripping thriller set in an intriguing location, but it falls short in several crucial areas. The pacing, character development, and melodramatic twist let down an otherwise promising premise. If you're looking for a book with a strong sense of place and atmosphere, it may still be worth a read, but be prepared for some disappointments along the way.</div></div><div><br /></div><div>Rating: 3 stars</div><div><br /></div><div><i>The Holiday Home </i>is available to <b><a href="https://amzn.to/3PQGzc7" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">buy</a> </b>now.</div><div><br /></div><div><b>If you like the sound of this book, you might also enjoy...</b></div><div><b><br /></b></div><div>

She's spent her life untethered and free, but when she finds herself newly engaged and a soon to be grandmother, Constance is forced to accept it may be time, perhaps, to settle down. Until a chance encounter with throws open a window to her past, and Constance decides to head to the Highlands to find an old friend...</i><div><br /></div><span><a name='more'></a></span><div><div>In <i>The Golden Girls' Road Trip</i>, readers are invited to embark on a heartwarming journey of rediscovery, adventure, and the enduring power of love. Constance Fitzgerald, a woman on the cusp of turning seventy, finds herself at a pivotal moment in her life. Engaged to be married and anticipating the arrival of her first grandchild, she grapples with the idea of settling down in her twilight years. However, a serendipitous encounter from her past propels her into a quest that will take her to the breathtaking landscapes of the Scottish Highlands in search of an old friend, reigniting the flames of passion and adventure.</div><div><br /></div><div>The novel opens with Connie at a crossroads in her life. Her impending marriage and grandmotherhood seem to beckon her towards a more conventional existence. Yet, Connie has always been a free spirit, unbridled by the constraints of age or societal expectations. Her character is a testament to the idea that one is never too old to chase their dreams, and her determination to embark on a road trip in her campervan, Ruby, is a testament to her unwavering spirit.</div><div><br /></div><div>While the premise of the book is undeniably intriguing, it must be acknowledged that the narrative has its moments of slowness. The story takes time to develop, and you might find yourself longing for a more engaging pace, especially in the early chapters. However, this measured approach also allows for a deeper exploration of Connie's character and the emotional landscape of her journey.</div><div><br /></div><div>One of the notable aspects of <i>The Golden Girls' Road Trip</i> is its use of flashbacks and memories. The backstory of Connie's enduring love story unfolds gradually, weaving in and out of the narrative. While this approach adds depth to the characters and their relationships, it can also be a double-edged sword. The original love story takes place in the past, long before the events of the book, which can make it challenging for readers to fully root for the characters and grasp their motivations in the present.</div><div><br /></div><div>However, you can't deny the author's meticulous research and attention to detail in bringing the book's locations to life. The story is deeply rooted in its setting. As Connie embarks on her road trip across the UK, readers are treated to vivid descriptions of breathtaking landscapes, quaint villages, and charming locals. For those who have had the privilege of visiting these locations, reading about them through Connie's eyes is a delightful experience, evoking a sense of nostalgia and wanderlust.</div><div><br /></div><div>Despite its occasional pacing issues and the challenge of relating to characters from a distant past, <i>The Golden Girls' Road Trip</i> ultimately delivers a poignant and inspiring message. It serves as a reminder that age should never be a barrier to adventure, self-discovery, and the possibility of finding true love, even when one least expects it. The book is a testament to the enduring spirit of individuals like Connie, who prove that life's most profound journeys can begin at any age.</div></div><div><br /></div><div>Rating: 3 stars</div><div><br /></div><div><i>The Golden Girls' Road Trip </i>is available to <b><a href="https://amzn.to/3Zin3JS" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">buy</a></b> now.</div><div><br /></div><div><b>If you like the sound of this book, you might also enjoy...</b></div><div><b><br /></b></div><div>

He was a scholar of myths. She was heiress to a fortune. They exchanged gifts and stories and believed they would live happily ever after - and in exchange for her love, Indigo extracted a promise: that her bridegroom would never pry into her past.<br /><br />But when Indigo learns that her estranged aunt is dying and the couple is forced to return to her childhood home, the House of Dreams, the bridegroom will soon find himself unable to resist. For within the crumbling manor’s extravagant rooms and musty halls, there lurks the shadow of another girl: Azure, Indigo’s dearest childhood friend who suddenly disappeared. As the house slowly reveals his wife’s secrets, the bridegroom will be forced to choose between reality and fantasy, even if doing so threatens to destroy their marriage... or their lives.</i><div><br /></div><span><a name='more'></a></span><div><div><i>The Last Tale of the Flower Bride</i> beckons readers with its sumptuous prose and Gothic atmosphere. However, its plot ultimately falls short.</div><div><br /></div><div>From the first page, Chokshi's writing casts a spell. Her words are a tapestry of beauty; a seductive dance of lyrical descriptions and haunting imagery that wraps around you like a silken shroud. The book is undeniably a literary feast. If you savour every word, every sentence, for its sheer aesthetic delight, this novel is a banquet waiting to be devoured. Chokshi's gift for language is evident in every paragraph, and her ability to create an atmosphere both eerie and enchanting is truly impressive.</div><div><br /></div><div>The story unfolds as a man enamoured with myths and fairy tales - the bridegroom - marries the enigmatic Indigo Maxwell-Casteñada. Their union is shrouded in mystery and secrets, and as part of the arrangement, the bridegroom must never pry into Indigo's past. However, when circumstances force them to return to Indigo's childhood home, the House of Dreams, the bridegroom's curiosity gets the better of him. He begins to unravel the enigma of his bride's past.</div><div><br /></div><div>One of the novel's strengths lies in its portrayal of the toxic friendship between Indigo and her childhood friend, Azure. Chokshi skillfully delves into the complexities of their relationship, revealing how Indigo manipulates Azure despite her own feelings and reservations. The dynamics between the two characters are captivating and add depth to the narrative.</div><div><br /></div><div>However, despite the book's undeniable strengths, it is not without its flaws. One of the major issues is the alternating viewpoints between the bridegroom and Azure. While this narrative choice could have added depth and complexity to the story, it often falls flat due to the striking similarity in the voices of the two narrators. It becomes challenging to discern who is speaking at times, leading to confusion and disconnection from the characters' individual experiences.</div><div><br /></div><div>Furthermore, the fairytale aspect of the plot feels disjointed and underdeveloped. While the writing exudes a fairytale-like quality, the fantasy elements never fully mesh with other aspects of the story, such as Azure's troubled home life.</div><div><br /></div><div>Another significant drawback is the unresolved nature of several plot points. For instance, at the beginning of the book, the bridegroom embarks on a quest to find a grimoire. However, this plot thread is left hanging and is never revisited or resolved.</div><div><br /></div><div><i>The Last Tale of the Flower Bride</i> is a novel of contradictions. On the one hand, it boasts exquisite prose and a Gothic atmosphere that wraps the reader in its seductive embrace. On the other hand, the plot struggles to live up to its promise of enchantment. If you are a reader who revels in beautiful writing and is content to be swept away by the cadence of words, this book may hold a special allure for you. However, if you seek substance and a tightly woven plot, you may be disappointed. </div><div><br /></div><div>Personally, I found myself torn between admiration for the ornate writing style and frustration with the book's lack of narrative momentum. Ultimately, <i>The Last Tale of the Flower Bride</i> was a struggle for me to finish. While it may find its audience among those who value style over substance, it was not a wholly satisfying reading experience.</div></div><div><br /></div><div>Rating: 2 stars</div><div><br /></div><div><i>The Last Tale of the Flower Bride </i>is available to <b><a href="https://amzn.to/464wzlY" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">buy</a> </b>now.</div><div><br /></div><div><b>If you like the sound of this book, you might also enjoy...</b></div><div><b><br /></b></div><div>

The rental host seems just a little too present. The personal chef reveals that their beautiful house has a spine-tingling history. And the friends have their own complicated past, with secrets that run blood deep.</i></div><div><i><br /></i></div><div><i>How well does Hannah know her brother, her own husband? Can she trust her best friend? Meanwhile, someone is determined to ruin the weekend, looking to exact a payback for deeds long buried. Who is the stranger among them?</i></div><div><br /></div><span><a name='more'></a></span><div><div><i>Secluded Cabin Sleeps Six</i> presents a promising premise - a weekend getaway for three couples in an isolated luxury cabin, nestled in the woods. The stage is set for relaxation and bonding, with breathtaking views, a hot tub, and even a personal chef. However, what begins as a dreamy escape quickly spirals into a chilling nightmare in this locked-room thriller.</div><div><br /></div><div>Unger weaves a complex web of characters, each carrying their own baggage of secrets and history. The book's blurb highlights the impending storm and the eerie presence of the rental host, hinting at the suspense to come. Unfortunately, the execution of this suspenseful setup falls short in a few key ways.</div><div><br /></div><div>One of the biggest challenges is the narrative structure. The story unfolds from multiple perspectives, a technique that can add depth and intrigue, but here it becomes a source of confusion. Different scenes from various characters' viewpoints are thrown together without clear connections. This jarring mish-mash makes it difficult for readers to understand how these disparate perspectives fit into the overarching storyline. As a result, cohesion is lost, and the reader's immersion in the plot is hindered.</div><div><br /></div><div>The overcrowded narrative exacerbates this confusion. With too much going on, the main storyline gets lost amidst a flurry of subplots and drama. It's difficult to discern the central thread amid the multitude of events - you can't see the wood for the trees! It's almost as if the book attempts to incorporate three different stories into one, leaving a disjointed and unsatisfying result.</div><div><br /></div><div>While exploring the six guests' relationships is a highlight, some elements introduced lack justification. The perspective of Bracken, the rental house host, seems superfluous and doesn't contribute to the main storyline. This, along with other over-the-top elements like the DNA connection, further fragments the reading experience. The book oscillates between compelling character-driven moments and perplexing narrative tangents, leaving readers torn between engagement and frustration.</div><div><br /></div><div>The characters themselves are multi-faceted, which is a strength of the book. However, the absence of relatable and genuinely likeable characters diminishes the reader's emotional investment. Most are portrayed as wealthy, entitled, and morally flawed, making it challenging to sympathise with their struggles.</div><div><br /></div><div>The pacing is also uneven due to narrative disarray. The tension that should build steadily is disrupted by constant shifts in perspective and plot focus. The book's mysterious and dark atmosphere could have been better maintained with a more streamlined approach.</div><div><br /></div><div><i>Secluded Cabin Sleeps Six</i> delivers a mix of intriguing ideas but struggles to weave them into a coherent and satisfying narrative. Lisa Unger's engaging exploration of relationships and secrets is overshadowed by the book's fragmented structure and overcomplicated plot. While the tension and darkness are palpable, they are hindered by the disjointed storytelling. Sadly, despite moments of promise, the final result falls short of its potential.</div></div><div><br /></div><div>Rating: 3 stars</div><div><br /></div><div><span style="font-style: italic;">Secluded Cabin Sleeps Six</span> is available to <b><a href="https://amzn.to/3OL8JEQ" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">buy</a></b> now.</div><div><br /></div><div><b>If you like the sound of this book, you might also enjoy...</b></div><div><b><br /></b></div><div>

After accidentally burning down the venue of her twin Hanna’s anniversary party, Eva discovers that her sister’s luck has completely turned around since her wedding day. In that moment, Eva decides there’s only one thing for it. She needs to find herself a husband too, and fast. But with the distractions of her husband hunt, Eva completely forgets about the family curse. But the curse has not forgotten about her...</i><div><br /></div><span><a name='more'></a></span><div><div><i>Eva Mallory's Husband Hunt</i> is a delightful romcom that weaves together equal parts of cuteness, humour, sweetness, and silliness, resulting in a highly enjoyable and entertaining read. While the family curse aspect might not appeal to everyone, the book's endearing qualities shine through, making it a charming addition to the romantic comedy genre.</div><div><br /></div><div>The immediate and undeniable chemistry between Eva and Luke is one of the book's standout features. However, introducing the family curse as an obstacle to their relationship might leave you sceptical at first; it certainly did for me. However, if you're willing to suspend your disbelief and immerse yourself in the story's whimsical charm, you will soon discover a tale that is both heartwarming and engaging.</div><div><br /></div><div>At its core, <i>Eva Mallory's Husband Hunt</i> is a light-hearted and hopeful romcom that captures the essence of finding love amidst life's challenges. The narrative revolves around Eva's quest to break her streak of misfortune by finding a husband. This premise sets the stage for a series of humorous and endearing escapades that certainly keep readers entertained.</div><div><br /></div><div>Dyson's writing focuses heavily on character development, with the story being 100% character-driven. Despite their flaws being front and centre, the characters remain lovable and relatable, drawing readers into their journeys of growth and self-discovery. The transformation and evolution of Eva, in particular, is evident, adding depth to the overall narrative.</div><div><br /></div><div>The book's charm lies in its ability to blend lighthearted moments with more profound themes. Eva's determination to change her luck is juxtaposed with her comedic and often silly endeavours, resulting in a balanced and enjoyable read. The interactions between characters, especially Eva and Luke, are infused with genuine emotion, making their journey from strangers to potential partners genuinely engaging.</div><div><br /></div><div>So, if you're in the mood for a delightful romcom that will leave you with a smile, <i>Eva Mallory's Husband Hunt</i> is definitely worth a spot on your reading list.</div></div><div><br /></div><div>Rating: 3 stars</div><div><br /></div><div><i>Eva Mallory's Husband Hunt </i>is available to <b><a href="https://amzn.to/3shJMZN" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">buy</a> </b>now.</div><div><br /></div><div><b>If you like the sound of this book, you might also enjoy...</b></div><div><b><br /></b></div><div>

In a highland village forgotten by the world, harvest season is over and the young who remain after war and flu have ravaged the village will soon head south to make something of themselves.</i></div><div><i><br /></i></div><div><i>Moira Jean and her friends head to the forest for a last night of laughter before parting ways. Moira Jean is being left behind. She had plans to leave once – but her lover died in France and with him, her future. The friends light a fire, sing and dance. But with every twirl about the flames, strange new dancers thread between them, music streaming from the trees.</i></div><div><i><br /></i></div><div><i>The fae are here.</i></div><div><i><br /></i></div><div><i>Suddenly Moira Jean finds herself all alone, her friends spirited away. The iron medal of her lost love, pinned to her dress, protected her from magic.</i></div><div><i><br /></i></div><div><i>For the Fae feel forgotten too. Led by the darkly handsome Lord of the Fae, they are out to make themselves known once more. Moira Jean must enter into a bargain with the Lord to save her friends – and fast, for the longer one spends with the Fae, the less like themselves they are upon return. If Moira Jean cannot save her friends before Beltane, they will be lost forever...</i></div><div><br /></div><span><a name='more'></a></span><div><div>Dancing on the delicate line between reality and enchantment,<i> The Thorns Remain</i> weaves a mesmerising tale that once again showcases the author's mastery of blending magic with the mundane. Having previously enjoyed J.J.A. Harwood's <i>The Shadow in the Glass</i>, I approached this new book with eager anticipation, and it did not disappoint.</div><div><br /></div><div>Set against the backdrop of a forgotten highland village in the aftermath of war and disease, the novel transports readers to a realm where the mystical and the ordinary entwine seamlessly. Harwood's prowess lies in capturing the essence of life in a tight-knit, isolated community, where relationships and secrets are as dense as the surrounding woods.</div><div><br /></div><div>The narrative's tempo mirrors the gradual shift of seasons as it unfolds at a deliberate pace. With a slow build and a slow burn, it casts a growing sense of unease that mimics the disquiet Moira Jean feels. As Moira Jean and her friends gather one fateful night, the boundaries between realms blur, and the fae emerge from the shadows, casting their spell upon the unsuspecting group. Harwood's storytelling makes you question reality alongside Moira Jean, intensifying the narrative's eerie allure.</div><div><br /></div><div>The richness of fae lore and myth woven into the story sets <i>The Thorns Remain</i> apart. The meticulous entwining of folklore, superstition, and ancient tales breathes life into the fae, rendering them as enigmatic and unpredictable as the mist-laden woods they inhabit. The vibrancy of these elements deepens the atmospheric magic that pervades the novel.</div><div><br /></div><div>Central to the story is Moira Jean, a character both vulnerable and resolute. Her determination and selflessness, even in the face of her own grief, propel the narrative forward. Still mourning her lost love, Angus, her courage and tenacity shine as she faces the enigmatic Dreamer to save her friends.</div><div><br /></div><div>However, the novel's crescendo doesn't blend seamlessly with its gradual tempo. The conclusion feels hurried and disconnected from the slow pacing maintained throughout. The sense of dissonance leaves the reader slightly unsatisfied, craving a more harmonious resolution that mirrors the earlier rhythm.</div><div><br /></div><div>In <i>The Thorns Remain</i>, J.J.A. Harwood invites us to step into a world where the fae dance on the periphery of human existence, and the barriers between reality and fantasy dissolve. With a steady hand, the author crafts a tale that resonates, capturing both the enchantment and the peril that come with brushing against the otherworldly. Moira Jean's journey into the heart of the fae's domain becomes our own, as we traverse the delicate threads of enchantment, loss, and courage, emerging on the other side, much like Moira Jean herself - forever changed.</div></div><div><br /></div><div>Rating: 4 stars</div><div><br /></div><div><i>The Thorns Remain </i>is available to <b><a href="https://amzn.to/44YobnM" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">buy</a> </b>now.</div><div><br /></div><div><b>If you like the sound of this book, you might also enjoy...</b></div><div><b><br /></b></div><div>

The book follows young July Hooper on a quest to unravel the truth about her mother's untimely death. Having previously enjoyed Koch's<i> If I Die Before I Wake</i>, I had high expectations for this novel, and it did not disappoint.</div><div><br /></div><div>The story revolves around family secrets and the flawed dynamics of its characters. Koch expertly portrays the intricacies of relationships, where simple misunderstandings can evolve into significant burdens over time. While initially challenging to immerse yourself in due to its non-linear timeline and frequent shifts between characters and periods, this book gradually unfolds into an engrossing and rewarding narrative.</div><div><br /></div><div>The book can be viewed as a tale of two halves. In the first half, there may be a struggle to establish a connection with the story, as the disconcerting nature of the narrative structure requires time to adjust. However, perseverance brings rewards as the second half captivates with its vibrant characters and enriched narrative flow. For this reason, I found it difficult to decide how to rate the story!</div><div><br /></div><div>At the core of <i>The Ash Museum</i> lie poignant themes of family, loss, and the circle of life. While the plot itself may not take centre stage, it is the depth and development of the characters that truly shine. The author artfully crafts multifaceted individuals who evoke empathy, weaving their lives together across generations. Through their stories, the author examines the profound desire to belong and the intricate emotional landscapes of human relationships.</div><div><br /></div><div>The book's emotional impact is undeniably potent, evoking a strong response that tugs at the heartstrings. Moments of intense poignancy may even elicit tears, as you become deeply invested in the characters' joys and sorrows.</div><div><br /></div><div><i>The Ash Museum</i> distinguishes itself through its focus on the beauty of the ordinary. Life's essence is masterfully captured through subtle details and snapshots of everyday existence. It is in these seemingly mundane moments that the book finds its power, illuminating the significance of the ordinary in shaping our lives.</div><div><br /></div><div>Through the tale's vivid and beautifully crafted prose, the author invites readers to reflect on the universal human quest for a place to call home - a place where you can authentically belong. While it may require some initial effort to acclimate to the narrative style, the rewards are plentiful. Rebecca Smith's writing style, full of evocative descriptions and nuanced characterisations, breathes life into the pages. This renders the journey through <i>The Ash Museum</i> a captivating and thought-provoking experience.</div><div><br /></div><div><i>The Ash Museum</i> stands as a testament to the power of storytelling and the resilience of the human spirit. It delves into profound themes of family, identity, and the pursuit of a place to fit in. With its poignant exploration of ordinary moments and its powerful emotional resonance, this book is sure to linger in your mind long after the final page is turned.</div></div><div><br /></div><div>Rating: 3 stars</div><div><br /></div><div><i>The Ash Museum </i>is available to <b><a href="https://amzn.to/43gbOll" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">buy</a> </b>now.</div><div><br /></div><div>If you like the sound of this book, you might also enjoy...</div><div><br /></div><div>

Check out my review of Sara Barnard's latest book, <i>Where the Light Goes</i>. </div><div><br /></div><div><div><i>Where the Light Goes</i> is a powerful and emotionally charged novel. The story centres around teenager Emmy, who is struggling to cope with the sudden loss of her sister, Beth. As she tries to navigate her grief, Emmy also has to deal with her strained relationship with her parents, friends, and boyfriend, and the biggest question of all - who is Emmy without Beth?</div><div><br /></div><div>One of the strengths of this novel is its exploration of grief and the different ways it affects people. Barnard does a great job of depicting the complexities of Emmy's emotions as she tries to come to terms with her loss. The portrayal of her relationships with those around her is also very realistic and nuanced, showing how grief can strain even the closest of bonds.</div><div><br /></div><div>The character development in this novel is excellent. Emmy is relatable and likeable, and her growth over the course of the story is compelling. Barnard's writing is beautiful and evocative, capturing the mood and atmosphere of the novel perfectly. The themes of family, grief, and self-discovery are handled with insight and sensitivity, and the story is both heart-wrenching and, ultimately, hopeful.</div><div><br /></div><div>Overall, <i>Where the Light Goes</i> is a stunning novel that will resonate with readers who have experienced loss or who are interested in exploring the complexities of human emotion. Highly recommended.</div></div><div><br /></div><div>Rating: 4 stars</div><div><br /></div><div><i>Where the Light Goes </i>is available to <b><a href="https://amzn.to/3NKvaer" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">buy</a></b> now.</div><div><br /></div><div><b>If you like the sound of this book, you might also enjoy...</b></div><div><b><br /></b></div><div>

You’ve probably heard of me – most people have.</i></div><div><i><br /></i></div><div><i>I am the mother of Daisy Logue. Seven years ago, I took her for a walk in the woods. Only I came out.</i></div><div><i><br /></i></div><div><i>I have no memory of what happened that day.</i></div><div><i><br /></i></div><div><i>I have tried to rebuild my life. Met a man, had another child – Luca. But I can’t let go of Daisy, or give up hope of seeing her again.</i></div><div><i><br /></i></div><div><i>And now, I have the chance to find out what happened to her.</i></div><div><i><br /></i></div><div><i>But what if pursuing the truth about my daughter risks my son’s life?</i></div><div><br /></div><span><a name='more'></a></span><div><div><i>In the Dark </i>is a captivating and ultimately enjoyable read. </div><div><br /></div><div><div>The book follows the reexamination of a cold case crime involving the disappearance of four-year-old Daisy Logue, with the main suspect being Nora, her mother. As a new documentary starts to be made about the case, evidence is reexamined and key people from the case quickly get involved. This structure allows Allan to slowly unravel the mystery of what happened to the missing girl, and it's impossible not to get drawn into the twists and turns of the plot as the truth is gradually revealed.</div><div><br /></div><div>Without giving too much away, it's safe to say that the motivations behind the crime are revealed to be complex and rooted in a desire for revenge. This is a patient, carefully planned crime, and Allan does a great job of building tension and keeping the reader guessing.</div></div><div><br /></div><div>The book is written really well, with Allan's unique voice and engaging writing keeping readers on the edge of their seats from start to finish. The story is dark, emotional, and tense, and it's easy to get caught up in the mystery of what happened the day Daisy disappeared. Who is telling the truth and who is lying? The threats from mysterious true crime forum posters add to the intensity of the story, and it's impossible not to get drawn into the twists and turns of the plot.</div><div><br /></div><div>While the main characters are not particularly likeable, the complex character development is a key focus of the plot. The character's flaws are a central part of the story, and Allan does a great job of making the characters feel real and fully fleshed out. Nora, in particular, is a mess - as you might expect - but Allan does a great job of making her feel like a real person rather than just a plot device.</div><div><br /></div><div>The twists in the book are a mixed bag - some are predictable, while others are surprising. However, the ending does feel a bit rushed and over-the-top, especially after the book's slow start. That being said, the ending is still satisfying and nicely ties up the loose ends of the story.</div><div><br /></div><div>Overall, <i>In the Dark</i> is a solid three-star book. While it may not be the most standout thriller, the writing is engaging and the story is still enjoyable overall. </div></div><div><br /></div><div>Rating: 3 stars</div><div><br /></div><div><i>In the Dark </i>is available to <b><a href="https://uk.bookshop.org/a/7887/9780008524586" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">buy</a></b> now.</div><div><br /></div><div><b>If you like the sound of this book, you might also enjoy...</b></div><div><b><br /></b></div><div>

And I have to say, it definitely didn't disappoint! This was one of the <b><a href="https://www.thewritinggreyhound.co.uk/2023/01/five-books-want-read-2023.html">top five books I wanted to read this year</a></b> and I'm happy to report that it exceeded my expectations. It's an excellent read that kept me on the edge of my seat from start to finish.</div><div><br /></div><div>The book is set in the beautiful city of Paris and the author does an incredible job of bringing the city to life. The descriptions of the city are so vivid and rich that I felt like I was there, walking the streets and experiencing the sights and sounds of Paris. The setting was really a fantastic choice as it really adds to the overall atmosphere of the book and makes me want to visit the city!</div><div><br /></div><div>The plot of <i>The Paris Apartment</i> is incredibly well-crafted, with plenty of twists and turns that kept me guessing until the very end. The tension builds as the book progresses and the author does an excellent job of keeping the reader on their toes. The characters are also incredibly well-developed. They are three-dimensional and I know it's a cliche, but they really do leap off the page. The flaws and difficulties of the main characters are an important focus of the book, which makes them feel incredibly realistic and relatable.</div><div><br /></div><div>The pacing of the book is also excellent; the story moves along at a steady pace that keeps the reader engaged. It's very well written, with descriptive and evocative language that really immerses the reader in the story. Lucy Foley has a unique writing style that is both engaging and captivating.</div><div><br /></div><div>In conclusion, I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves a good mystery thriller. It's a fantastic read and I can't wait to see what the author comes up with next. This book is a must-read for fans of the genre and for anyone who loves a well-crafted and well-written story. I guarantee that once you start reading, you won't be able to put it down!</div></div><div><br /></div><div>Rating: 5 stars</div><div><br /></div><div><i>The Paris Apartment </i>is available to <b><a href="https://uk.bookshop.org/a/7887/9780008385071" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">buy</a> </b>now.</div><div><br /></div><div><b>If you like the sound of this book, you might also enjoy...</b></div><div><b><br /></b></div><div>

Many search for the perfect gift that reflects their feelings and shows the importance of their relationship on this special day. </div><div><br /></div><div>One symbolic option that is meaningful but often overlooked is the hummingbird. They bring beauty and joy to our lives and have a rich symbolic meaning that makes them the perfect gift for Valentine's Day. Let's explore the symbolism of hummingbirds and discover why hummingbird-themed items make great gifts for Valentine's Day.</div><div><br /></div><span><a name='more'></a></span><div>Hummingbirds are small, brightly-coloured birds that are known for their agility and their ability to fly in all directions, including backward. They are also known for their distinctive humming sound, which is created by the rapid flapping of their wings. In many cultures, hummingbirds are seen as symbols of joy, love, and grace.</div><br />One of the main reasons that hummingbird-themed products make great gifts for Valentine's Day is because they are often associated with love and romance. They are widely considered to be symbols of love and devotion.
